Efficient yard and dock management is critical for high-performing warehouses. Oracle WMS Cloud provides a robust framework for managing the Gate to Dock process, streamlining inbound & outbound logistics, improving visibility, and reducing turnaround times.
Gate to Dock process Covers all activities from the time a shipment / truck reported at the gate pick up or delivery till the shipment is ready to be unloaded / loaded at the dock.
This includes the following sub processes:
- Gate operations: Managing the vehicles reported at the warehouse gate for pick up & delivery, capturing the information, verifying / validating the documents and managing gate in & gate out information
- Yard Operations: Managing the yard activities such as allocating a yard location, within yard movements and tracking vehicles within the yard.
- Dock operations: Scheduling & managing dock appointments, dock door assignments, managing dock door check & check out and monitoring the dock door activities such as loading or unloading.
Here's a breakdown of the key activities in an end-to-end Gate to Dock process:
- Vehicle Reported at Gate
The process begins when a vehicle arrives at the warehouse gate. At this point, basic information such as vehicle number, driver details, and the purpose of the visit is gathered.
- Document Verification
Security or gate personnel verify shipment documents (like ASN, bill of lading, or appointment references) to ensure the vehicle is authorized for entry.
- Appointment Creation (if required) and Gate-In
If an appointment doesn’t already exist, one may be created in Oracle WMS Cloud. Once verified, the vehicle is allowed to gate in, and the system captures the exact gate-in timestamp. Appointment slip with bar code or QR code can be provided to the truck driver.
- Truck Weigh-In
Optionally the truck may be weighed at the inbound scale, especially if weight-based verification is part of compliance or receiving protocols. Oracle WMS can be integrated with Weight scale to receive weight information.
- Locate to an Empty Yard Location
In case dock is not available, truck will be guided to an empty yard location, and the vehicle is directed to park there until a dock becomes available. This improves yard utilization and traffic flow.
- Truck Checks into Dock
When the dock is ready, the vehicle is called from the yard and checks in at the assigned dock door. This marks the beginning of receiving process
- Unload Goods and Check Out from Dock
Once receiving is completed, dock supervisor checks out the truck from the dock. This will make the dock available for next appointment.
- Move to Empty Yard Location
If required, the vehicle may be moved back to an empty yard spot for staging or additional checks before exit. Optionally weight can be checked before gate out.
- Truck Reports for Gate Out
When ready to leave, the truck reports to the exit gate. Final documentation and checks are performed.
- Truck Exits
The vehicle exits the premises, and the system logs the gate-out timestamp, closing the loop on the Gate to Dock process.
